Unlovable Hands Collective เริ่มต้นจากมูลนิธิ Cascade และ การรวมตัวกันของกลุ่มบุคคลที่ไม่ได้มีประสบการณ์ทำงานศิลปะ (Outsider Art) แต่รวมกลุ่มกันทำงานศิลปะ เพื่อเป็นกระบอกเสียงให้กับผู้ป่วยเรื้อรังที่อาศัยอยู่ในสภาพแวดล้อมที่ไม่เอื้ออำนวยต่อการรักษา เนื่องจากปัจจัยทางเศรษฐกิจและสังคม ซึ่งการรวมกันนี้ มูลนิธิ Cascade ได้ร่วมมือกับ NGOs ในการช่วยเหลือดูแลให้การสนับสนุนและคำแนะนำทางการแพทย์อย่างชอบธรรม

ตามคำเชิญของ YMD Art Space และ Maielie เรารู้สึกเป็นเกียรติอย่างมาก ที่ได้มีโอกาสเข้าร่วมในงาน S.O.E Our City Old Town ซึ่งงานศิลปะแบบจัดวาง “เราลงเรือลำเดียวกันแล้ว” ถูกถ่ายทอดออกมาในรูปแบบวิดีโอสารคดีและภาพถ่ายที่สื่อถึงผู้ป่วยของกลุ่มเรา และการนำเสนอครั้งนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อบอกกล่าวเรื่องราวในปัจจุบันที่อยู่ควบคู่กับเมืองเก่าแห่งนี้
เป้าหมายของงานศิลปะชุดนี้ เป็นเหมือนการเน้นย้ำเสียงของคนชายขอบที่ถูกปิดกั้น จากการมีส่วนร่วมในสังคมกระแสหลัก รวมทั้งในโลกศิลปะ ที่ได้หยิบเรื่องราวของพวกเขามาพูด แต่ก็ไม่ได้ลงลึกมากพอถึงความเป็นจริงของพวกเขา และในงานศิลปะชิ้นนี้ พยายามที่จะแสดงให้เห็นถึงจุดบกพร่องนั้น พร้อมกับบอกเล่าวิถีชีวิตกลุ่มคนชายขอบอย่างตรงไปตรงมา
Unlovable Hands Collective is an initiative of Cascade Foundation, a collective of outsider artists with little to no formal training or budget, united to amplify and protect the voices of the cases that Cascade Foundation manage. Cascade Foundation is the organizational branch of a mutual aid group that manages cases referred to them from other NGOs. Mostly we manage cases with chronic illnesses that require medical advocacy due to treatment failure. Overwhelmingly, the causes of treatment failure are due to socioeconomic factors pushing the individual into a dangerous environment rather than any personal flaw.
Our cases are complex and varied, and our response is necessarily intersectional, pluralistic and adaptive. The factors that cause treatment adherence failure for people living with HIV, prevent refugees from settling in a third country, or prevent housing justice for the people living along the railways, all have their genesis in a system that is not designed for outliers. Our foundation builds a structure to enable communities to serve themselves by offering direct relief to extreme cases, along with logistics and training to burgeoning local mutual aid networks and established NGOs alike.
At the invitation of YMD Art Space and Maielie for S.O.E Our City Old Town and an extended period of time thereafter, UHC is deeply honoured and humbled to present its debut installation, ‘we’re all in the same boat now’ is a series of interviews and photographs of cases from the collective, presented in an attempt to record, preserve and enhance stories that represent the many histories that the Old City shares.
The goal of this installation is to highlight the voices of those who are marginalized by and often barred from participating in all aspects of mainstream society, including the art world. The voices here are being celebrated in a space that they would otherwise have little access to. Their stories are told as true to reality as possible, but with their art curated, colours selected, interviews edited, and the speakers selected. This piece both attempts to communicate the truth of the people living on the edges of society, and the futility of trying to do so through art in the absence of personal relationship and experience.
